Lincoln at 200: Events to remember

Here’s a partial list of some of the tri-state events celebrating Lincoln’s 200th birthday planned for the coming months.

June 19-20 — Lincoln Institute for Teachers
University of Southern Indiana, Evansville. The fifth annual Lincoln Institute for Teachers, “A House Dividing: Lincoln and the Emergence of Modern Politics,” will focus on the year 1858 as a turning point in American politics and the Lincoln-Douglas debates.

Aug. 8-9 — Lincoln in Indianapolis
Details are still being planned. Event will center around re-enactment of an address President-elect Lincoln gave Feb. 11, 1861 near the Indiana Statehouse while en route to Washington to assume the presidency. Event to include a formal dinner, lecture and conference. www.in.gov/lincoln/.

Aug. 16-23 — Tour de Lincoln
Tour de Lincoln will be a week-long, 361-mile bicycle tour in honor of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. The bike tour will travel as closely as possible the pioneering route followed by Lincoln through Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois (see map above) and visit significant Lincoln historic sites along the way. Evening entertainment includes music and Lincoln historians.

Daily itinerary includes rides varying from 46 to 81 miles. Ride starts in Hodgenville, Ky., and progresses to Springfield, Ill. Daily rides are: Hodgenville to Tell City; Tell City to Jasper; Jasper to Vincennes; Vincennes to Marshall, Ill.;  Marshall to Decatur, Ill.; and Decatur to Springfield, Ill. The tour will conclude with a formal ceremony laying a wreath on Lincoln’s Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The tour will include a camping and a hotel/motel option for accommodations. Sag wagon with bicycle repair included; and return bus transportation from Springfield to Hodgenville. Ride is limited to 100 riders. Registration deadline is July 15. Basic cost for the tour is $595.

Sept. 8-Oct. 3 — Journey of Remembrance
Re-traces Abraham Lincoln’s historic 1828 trip from Rockport to New Orleans on a replica flatboat. The flatboat and its crew will set off from the banks of the Ohio River at Rockport and make 18 stops in eight states following the same path Lincoln took on this life-changing trip down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. On this trip, Lincoln witnessed his first slave auction which cemented his anti-slavery views. Indiana stops include Evansville and Mount Vernon. Other stops include Cairo, Ill.; New Madrid, Mo.; Memphis, Tenn.; Vicksburg, Miss.; Baton Rouge, La.; and New Orleans.

Nov. 1 — Lincoln’s Last Visit
Spencer County Courthouse, Rockport. Lincoln last visited Rockport on Oct. 30, 1844, while campaigning on behalf of presidential candidate Henry Clay. Commemorative ceremony pays tribute to special visit. 888-444-2952; ThinkLincoln.org.

Nov. 19 — Dedication Day Ceremony
Gettysburg, Pa. The third National Signature Event focuses on the national cemetery dedication where Lincoln delivered his most famous speech, “The Gettysburg Address.” http://www.abrahamlincoln200.org.

Nov. 22 — Lincoln Thanksgiving Dinner
4-H Community Center, Chrisney. Dine like the pioneers at this unique event inspired by the fact that while Lincoln was president he established the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day. ThinkLincoln.org.

Feb. 11-12, 2009 — Pilgrimage to Lincoln’s Tomb
