June 2008 That Reminds Me
Why not picnic?
by Emily Schilling Editor
Remember that old “Wander Indiana” tourism slogan from a few years ago? Well, it needs to be reinstated!
With this summer’s ever-escalating gas prices, many of us will be skipping faraway trips this year, opting to stay close to home. But luckily, we live in a beautiful state blessed with long, warm June days, and lush green grass and trees. Nature’s glory is all around, if not in our backyards, then in nearby parks and forests.
Eating outside is a special benefit of the season. June’s weather is typically perfect for a meal surrounded by blue skies and sunshine. A summertime picnic, whether it be orchestrated on a blanket, picnic table or tailgate, can turn a simple meal into a special event. I don’t know why, but stick a Tupperware dish full of potato salad on a picnic table and folks are drawn to it like Popeye is to spinach. Maybe more so. Carbs, mayonnaise, pickles — what’s not to love?
Have you dined “alfresco” lately? Take note of these June events and plan a picnic to celebrate.
• June is National Dairy Month. Chug some milk, grill up some cheeseburgers and serve ice cream for dessert!
• June 1 marks the 54th year since the debut of Linus’ security blanket in the Peanuts comic strip. What better reason to sprawl out on a blanket outside and eat comfort food, Charlie Brown?
• Donald Duck was born June 9, 1934. Fried chicken ... or any poultry-based dish ... may not be the best picnic food to serve that day. Out of respect for Donald, I’d stick with beef or pork.
• The baseball was invented on June 12, 1839. Commemorate the occasion with hot dogs, peanuts and Cracker Jack.
• June 15 is Electricity Day and Fly a Kite Day. Both events honor Ben Franklin’s discovery of electricity in 1752. Remember, if you fly a kite following your picnic, do so away from power lines ... and picnic blankets.
• June 30 is Superman’s birthday. After the picnic’s over, you can wear the blanket as a cape! (Just joking!) Interestingly, June 30 is also Meteor Day. A meteorite crashed into Siberia on that day in 1908. Creative Martha Stewart types can tie these two occasions into a celebration with meat(eor) balls and Clark (as in Kent) bars for dessert.
Enjoy the outdoors while you can — when the extreme heat and humidity hit, you’ll likely be in the air-conditioned indoors!
