June 2008 PowerKids
Happy ‘Leon’ Day!
June 25 is Leon Day. Huh? You’ve never heard of it, right?
Leon Day is the halfway point between last year’s Christmas and this year’s Christmas. Leon is Noel spelled backward. Get it?
Obviously, most people don’t really celebrate Leon Day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t. Leon Day is a good excuse for a summertime party. Why not get together with some school friends you haven’t seen since school ended a few weeks ago?
How you celebrate Leon Day is up to you. Just as each family celebrates Christmas a little differently, Leon Day is a “holiday” without rules. However, here are some ideas to make the day fun:
• Pull out your family’s holiday CDs to listen to while you decorate Christmas cookies.
• Watch DVDs of Christmas movies. In December, watching “The Christmas Story” over and over again got a little boring, but in June you’ll have a whole new appreciation for the movie!
• If you and your friends are into crafts, make homemade gift tags and cards which you and your family can use at Christmastime. Bring out the scissors, scrapbook paper, markers and stickers, and have fun being creative.
• Have a Leon Day gift exchange. Invite everyone to bring a small gift to the party and draw numbers allowing everyone a chance to pick out a gift. You could suggest that the gifts come from the dollar store — that way no one will have to spend a whole lot of money.
• The beauty of Leon Day is that you can celebrate it by doing things you couldn’t do at Christmas. For instance, you could spend the day at the pool!
And the winners are …

Our book winners are …
Also last month, we said we’d give away some of the nominated books. Thanks to all those who entered our online book drawing and told us what books they liked to read.
We loved hearing which books are your favorites, and which authors and illustrators you like. Among the most popular books were those in the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series, the “Magic Tree House” series and the “Goosebumps” series. Top vote-getters for favorite author were Mary Pope Osborne and Barbara Park. The list included such well-known authors as Lemony Snicket (also known as Daniel Handler), R.L. Stine, Richard Scarry and J.K. Rowling.
