Electric Consumer's
Fifth Annual

Oh, watt fun the 2000 version of our annual Christmas ornament contest has been!

New categories and nostalgic anniversaries helped recharge the fifth annual event for our readers and ourselves. The results are printed here and on the cover and back cover.

Once again, a whole Santa's workshop of ornaments from readers statewide arrived at our office starting in early fall. Forty-one consumers, young and old, sent in 56 ornaments for judging.

As in previous years, all the ornaments were displayed in an open meeting room at our Indianapolis office and judging was done by popular ballot. Anyone in the building shared by Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives, Wabash Valley Power Association, Service Concepts and the Cooperatives Federal Credit Union was invited to vote Oct. 31.

When the polls closed at the end of the day, we tallied 40 ballots. And our results were almost as close as the presidential election! Fortunately, we got to pick more than just one winner though many wonderful works were still left unadorned when it came to our "gold, silver and bronze" designations.

This year, in response to reader and participant letters, we broke the contest into two divisions.

"Santa's Workshop" division was essentially the same as the lone category in years past. It was open to all readers as long as they received the Electric Consumer as members of a subscribing electric cooperative or as personal paid subscribers. They also had to be ineligible for the new division, "The Hall of Fame."

The Hall of Fame division was reserved for designers who had placed first, second or third in any of the previous contests.

First, second and third place were awarded in the Santa's Workshop division, as were two honorable mentions. The names of the top three Santa's Workshop winners will be inscribed into the Hall of Fame annals for next year. A single "Best of" was awarded in the Hall of Fame division.

By creating two divisions, we hoped to encourage more entries from hobbyists who might have been reluctant to participate in the past without limiting the participation of anyone.

The ever-popular "Electrical Bonus" went to the ornament in either division that best incorporated electricity or an electrical theme. A record 32 ornaments competed for the bonus this year, thanks in part to the upcoming 50th anniversaries of electric co-op mascot Willie Wiredhand and the Electric Consumer as artists worked either theme into their designs.

As in past years, an auction of the ornaments will be held this month to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana. On the back cover, be sure to read how you can participate.

Richard G. Biever is senior editor of Electric Consumer.
